Poetry Out Loud is a contest that encourages the nation's youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation of poems contained in the Poetry Out Loud online anthology. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage. Poetry Out Loud uses a pyramid structure that starts at the classroom level. Winners advance to a school-wide competition, then to a regional and/or state competition, and ultimately to the National Finals. http://www.poetryoutloud.org/about
Each school is responsible for organizing and conducting their own classroom and school competitions.

As a district, DPS is not far from requiring district curriculum for electives. I want to be sure English teachers have the founding voice in how district curriculum for electives is written.
This is by no means an attempt to standardize these electives. In fact, all curriculum documents will be created collaboratively by those actually teaching the courses, not by me. This is a attempt to provide support in the form of guidance and teacher contacts for all elective teachers and curate a meaningful arsenal of evidence for advocacy purposes.
I have created a partial list of the electives most commonly taught by English teachers. Please email me with other electives currently taught that are not on this list.

If you are interested in helping forge the path for DPS electives curriculum, please email me.
